How Do I Use NI Volume License Manager for Bookkeeping?Primary Software: Other NI Software>>NI Volume License ManagerPrimary Software Version: 2.0 Primary Software Fixed Version: 1.0 Secondary Software: N/A
Problem: I am using NI Volume License Manager (VLM) to manage software installations and usage as well as compliance to my Volume License Agreement. According to KnowledgeBase 339F3J6E, "administrators are encouraged to use NI Volume License Manager as a bookkeeping tool for these installations to ensure compliance with their Volume License Agreement”. How do I do this? Solution: Any software that is on your Volume License Agreement (VLA) and does not include activation can still be tracked by using VLM as a bookkeeping tool. If you would like your non-activatable software to be included on your VLA, email agreements@ni.com. Bookeeping for products which do not include activation These products will still appear in the volume license agreement, license file, and NI Volume License Manager. Grant permission to all computers that are using that particular product. Products without licensing will appear in NI VLM marked as "Bookkeeping" or "Tracked Manually". If the product does not have licensing built into the product, it will not check VLM for permission before being used. However, permission assignments in NI VLM allow you to keep track of product usage for all of your NI products in the same place. Bookkeeping for old versions of products which now contain activation: Bookkeeping can also be used to track product versions which have not yet implemented licensing even if newer versions have implemented licensing. For example, TestStand 2.0 did not implement licensing while TestStand 3.0 and higher have. On your agreement, license file, and in NI VLM, you will see the number of licenses you have purchased and they will all be for the most current version. If you have one computer that is still using an older version of the software without licensing, you can grant permission for the newer version of the software to keep track of the software use. Note that doing so will decrease your available seats by one since permission is assigned to that particular computer. Client computers running only unlicensed software do not need any additional configuration to work with the license server, since the product itself is unlicensed and the use of a license server is irrelevant. Note: If you have multiple versions of a particular software product for a computer/user, you only need to grant permission for the computer/user to use that product one time. Make sure that the volume license file includes the latest version of the client software. If it doesn't, you can request an updated license file by emailing agreements@ni.com.
