Issue Details

The CMOS battery in my PXI or PXIe controller seems to be failed because the controller's clock repeatedly loses its time.
What type of batteries are used in these controllers and how can I replace them?

Solution

Important: NI is not liable for damage incurred while changing a CMOS battery.  The recommended procedure is to send your controller in to Return Material Authorization (RMA) to have the battery replaced; however, the 3 Volt battery can be replaced by an end user if desired.
  • For PXI-8104, PXI-8105, PXI-8106, PXI-8130, PXI-8170, PXI-8180, PXI-8190, PXIe 8880 and PXIe-8840 :
The battery is a 3 Volt lithium Panasonic BR2032 and can be purchased at any electronics store (before September 2021).  
Note: As of September 2021, PXI/PXIe controllers use Murata CR2032W 3V Lithium coin cell.
 
  • For PXI-8170 RT, PXI-8156B RT, PXI-8145 RT, and PXI-8146 RT controllers:
The battery is a 5V lithium battery. Replacement of this battery is not available because it is obsolete. Replacement requires special equipment that is no longer available to NI's RMA department. 
  • For the rest of the PXIe controllers and PXI-8101, PXI-8102, PXI-8108, PXI-8110, PXI-8183:
This device contains a long-life coin cell battery. It can only be replaced through the Return Material Authorization process.
