Configuring A Multi-Controller VXI System

Hardware: VXI/VME/MXI>>VXI Controllers

Problem:
How do I configure a VXI system with multiple controllers in a single chassis? When I run Resource Manager only the master controller shows up in Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX).

Solution:
There are two ways to configure a multi-controller VXI system:
  1. This method assumes the master controller (slot 0) is configured to be message based and the slave device(s) is/are configured to be register based. For instructions on how to configure the Device Class (i.e. message-based or register-based) for your controller, please refer to the Configuring the Device Class section below. Once all the controllers are configured for the proper mode, run the Resource Manager on the master controller. It will then find the other controller(s) in the chassis.

  2. The second method assumes that all of the controllers are configured to be message based. Run Resource Manager on the slaves first (one at a time). They will begin configuration and then pause with the message, "Waiting for Begin Normal Operation", while waiting for Resource Manager on the master to be run. Run the Resource Manager on the master and the slaves will be detected in Measurement and Automation Explorer.
A controller can be configured to be either message or register based by:
  1. Open MAX on the controller that needs to be changed. Expand Devices and Interfaces and then right click on the VXI System and select Hardware Configuration.

  2. Select the Device tab. Within this tab, select either Message-based or Register-based from the Device class drop down menu.
