Swapping Two FieldPoint Controllers and Keeping the Same Configuration for Modules
Hardware: Compact FieldPoint>>Controllers, FieldPoint>>Controllers/Network Modules
Problem: I need to swap out one ethernet FieldPoint controller for another. How can I do this without changing all of the settings manually?
Solution: Note: This procedure only works if you change the same family of controllers (i.e. from 20xx to 20xx or from 21xx to 21xx).
Here are the steps to change one FieldPoint setup to a previous controller's setting. These controllers should be the same model.
- Save the
.iak file that has the configuration of the FieldPoint setup in Measurement and Automation Explorer (MAX) if you haven't already. This can be done by clicking on the FieldPoint Items in MAX and selecting Save or Save As....
- You should have at least two FieldPoint controllers appearing in Remote Systems after connecting the new controller. The first should be 0.0.0.0 (the new controller), and the second should have a red X next to it (the old controller). There will also be any other controllers that are currently working in your system. Make note of the IP address of the FieldPoint controller with the red X, then delete it from Remote Systems.
- Unload the current
.iak file by clicking on New (do not save changes again).
- Change the IP address of the new controller to the address of the old controller. You may need to power cycle the controller. Make sure that the DIP switch that resets the IP is not on.
- Load the
.iak file that you saved in step 1 (or previously).
- Click on each of the modules and choose to apply settings that are on file, instead of the device. This will apply settings from all of the channels for the module. It should pop up an error when you select these modules. This is expected. The Channel Configuration tab of the module will allow you to choose to apply the file configuration.

- If you changed to a different controller model, select the remote controller unit and apply the device settings. This will update the
.iak file to the new controller type.
