Can I Use a Free Compiler with Simulation Interface Toolkit (SIT)?

Hardware: PXI/CompactPCI>>Controllers

Problem:
The LabVIEW Simulation Interface Toolkit 5.0 Readme states that I need to install Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 or .NET 2003 or 2005 to convert a model into a model DLL. Is there a free compiler I can use with Simulation Interface Toolkit (SIT)?

Solution:
Microsoft offers a free edition of its C++ compiler, called Visual C++ 2005 Express Edition, available for download at Visual Studio 2005 Express Editions. This free version lacks several essential components necessary for SIT to build a model DLL from a model. Microsoft provides these additional components in the Windows Platform SDK, available for download at Windows Server 2003 SP1 Platform SDK Web Install. After downloading and installing the Windows Platform SDK, you must complete the following additional steps.
  1. Create a directory under Microsoft Visual Studio 8\VC called PlatformSDK.
  2. Copy the bin, include, and lib directories from the PlatformSDK installation directory into this new directory.
  3. Copy the afxres.h and winres.h files from the include\mfc directory into the include directory, located one level up from the include\mfc directory.

These steps apply to SIT 5.0 and later.
