How do I connect and configure my NI 9151 R Series Expansion Chassis for use with my R Series Intelligent DAQ Device?

Solution

To use the NI 9151 with your R Series device, use the SHC68-68-RDIO cable to connect the expansion chassis to any of the DIO connectors on the R Series device. 

NOTE: Refer to the R Series Cable and Accessories Compatibility guide to determine what R Series devices are compatible with the NI-9151.

With multifunction R Series devices (NI 783xR, NI 784xR, NI 785xR), you can connect up to two R Series expansion chassis for a maximum of eight I/O modules per R Series device. With digital R Series devices (NI 781xR), you can connect up to four R Series expansion chassis for a maximum of 16 I/O modules per R Series device.

To configure your LabVIEW FPGA application to recognize the C Series modules in the expansion chassis, do the following:

For LabVIEW 8.x and later
  1. With the expansion chassis properly cabled to the R Series device, power up the PXI controller or desktop PC system.
  2. Create a new project or open your existing project.
  3. Right-click on My Computer in the Project Explorer window and select New»Targets and Devices... Then, select Existing Targets and Devices, select your R Series Device from the list and click OK.
  4. Right-click on the newly-created FPGA Target under My Computer, and select New»R Series Expansion Chassis.
  5. In the dialog window that appears, select the connector to which you have cabled the NI 9151 expansion chassis and click OK. Optionally, choose to discover C Series modules now. Otherwise, add them in steps 6 and 7.
  1. Right-click on the newly-created Expansion Chassis and select New»C Series Modules...
  2. Select Existing target or device, expand C Series Module, select Continue when prompted to halt FPGA code, select all of the detected modules, and click OK.
  3. Right-click on the newly-created modules and select New»FPGA I/O. Add all of the desired Analog and Digital I/O and click OK.

For LabVIEW 7.x:

  1. With the expansion chassis properly cabled to the R Series device, power up the PXI controller or desktop PC system.
  2. Launch LabVIEW and select the R Series device from the Execution Target list.
  3. Create and/or load a LabVIEW FPGA project into the Embedded Project Manager.
  4. Open the Configure Target for CompactRIO window, Hardware»Configure Target for CompactRIO..., to display which CompactRIO modules are on each connector.
  5. Press the Discover Modules button and select all connectors cabled to an expansion chassis.
  6. Once the modules are found, click OK.
Once you have completed the steps above, your R Series device is fully configured to use the NI 9151 expansion chassis.
 

Additional Information

If you don't see this functionality, you may not have the proper compatible drivers installed.
  • Verify that your installed NI-RIO driver is compatible with your installed version of LabVIEW. 
  • Starting in 2015, the NI-RIO driver has been split into three separate installers. Of these drivers, the NI compactRIO and the NI R Series Multifunction RIO drivers are the two that you need for this functionality. You can check the "Supported hardware" section of the download page for these drivers to see if your hardware is supported.
