How Do I Access Console Out on a roboRIO?
Primary Software: LabVIEW Modules>>LabVIEW Real-Time Module
Primary Software Version: 2015
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: N/A
Problem: I would like to view the console output on my roboRIO. How do I do this?
Solution: The following steps walk through the process of obtaining the console out from the roboRIO:
- Connect the the RS-232 (serial) port on the roboRIO to the serial port of your computer. The typical serial port on most computers will be a DB-9 connector, while the roboRIO uses a 3 pin header. See the following table for the proper wiring configuration:

- When in Run Mode, you will need to enable the console out in MAX or through the Web Configuration.

Note: Safe Mode should be set to display the console out by default.
- To view the output on the computer, you will need to run a terminal program. PuTTY is a popular choice with a free download. Configure this for serial and set the baud rate to 115200 (the default for roboRIO)
Figure 4: Standard Putty Configuration
- Run PuTTY, or the terminal program of your choice, and restart the roboRIO.
- At this point, the console out should be displaying information as the roboRIO boots up. If not, try adjusting the TX and RX wiring as these are swapped if using a null cable instead of a standard serial cable. The figure below shows an example of the expected output if the wiring is successful.
