Resolving Resource Conflicts in Windows 98/95
Hardware: GPIB
Problem: How can I resolve resource conflicts in Windows 95/98?
Solution: In Windows 98/95, the Device Manager can be used to determine which devices and drivers are using resources. Under the
Start Button » Settings » Control Panel. Double-click on
System. Now click on the
Device Manager Tab.
From here, click on the + next to "National Instruments GPIB Interfaces" to display your GPIB interface. Note, the GPIB may already appear with a yellow exclamation mark as seen below.
The device manager lists every device that Windows 98/95 has configured.
Note: Windows 98/95 cannot detect legacy AT/ISA bus devices. They must be added using Add New Hardware.
- If the Device Manager shows a yellow exclamation mark, there is a resource conflict. By double-clicking on the device with the warning and selecting the Resources tab, the Device Manager will usually inform you about which other devices are conflicting with the one you were checking on. You should see a screen like the one indicated below. Your resources need to match these settings except you may change the IRQ level to 5. Refer to the hardware user manual for possible switch settings to change the IRQ level.
Uncheck the "Use automatic settings" options. Change the Settings based on: to Basic Configuration 1 (This configuration allows you to manually select all three resource settings). From here, select resources by clicking the up/down arrows to set the resources as shown above.
- If the device manager does not show an Exclamation Mark, you have the Base I/O address correct. If you
received a message from the Diagnostics mentioning an IRQ conflict or a DMA conflict, this may be caused by having installed another peripheral in the ISA or PCI expansion slot.
If you received a message about a Base I/O Conflict, then you probably have a legacy (non Plug-N-Play) board which is causing a resource conflict with your GPIB board. Because you may have unknown devices
(unknown to Windows 98/95), there may be conflicts that Windows 98/95 cannot detect. Remove all other devices and peripherals from your computer even if the other devices don't seem to have a problem. These devices may conflict with the GPIB board.
