Erroneous Messages About Improperly Signed License Files

Primary Software: Other NI Software>>NI Volume License Manager
Primary Software Version: 2.0
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: N/A

Problem:
I am using Volume License Manager 2.0. When I open NI Software on the server machine, and the software was released with or after LabVIEW 8.0, I get a message stating "The license file on &ltSERVER_NAME> is Improperly Signed." However, I am still able to open older versions of my software. Why am I getting the message and how can I fix the issue?

Solution:
This error can occur when you open LabVIEW 7.1 on the same machine as where VLM is running. When LabVIEW opens, it puts a .tmp license in the Volume License Manager directory. When any software using version 3.x of NI License Manager (LabVIEW 8.0, TestStand 3.5, CVI 8.0, etc.) attempts to open, it sees these additional files and thinks that the licenses are improperly signed due to a line written in these single seat licenses. Any software that utilizes 2.x of NI License Manager (LabVIEW 7.1, TestStand 3.1, CVI 7.1, etc.) still works because it does not check for this line within the file.

Another error that could occur because of this is NILM19. Since the .tmp license is reserved for the server computer, client computer will not be able to get license from the correct license file, which results in NILM19 (no license available).

The solution is to ensure that VLM only looks at the volume license file and ignores the other license files. This can be done by changing the "License" registry key found at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE » SOFTWARE » FLEXlm License Manager » NILM License Manager from "C:\...\Volume License Manager\" to "C:\...\Volume License Manager\nivlm.lic". This fix should only be used for VLM 2.0 as version 1.0 will change the registry key back to the original value.
