NI 9870 Does not show up in FPGA IO Constant

Primary Software: LabVIEW Modules>>FPGA Module
Primary Software Version: 8.6
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: Driver Software>>NI-RIO
Hardware: Serial>>RS-232>>NI 9870

Problem:
I have placed an I/O constant or I/O control as the input to my FPGA I/O Method Node or FPGA I/O Property Node and want to select my 9870/9871 module or one of it's ports.  Why does it not show up as one of the selections?

Solution:
FPGA I/O elements are part of the LabVIEW project.  The 9870/9871 modules do not have FPGA I/O elements in the project and therefore do not support direct interaction with the I/O pins due to the RS-232 and RS-485/422 protocols.  Because of this, they cannot be selected in an I/O constant or I/O control.  To configure the Method or Property node for the 9870/9871 ports:
  1. Add a FPGA Method I/O Node (FPGA I/O Panel) to the front panel.
  2. Right-click the node, and choose the module or port from the Select Items menu.
  3. Select the method you need use.
