Information About Removable Screw Terminal (COMBICON) Connectors

Hardware: Industrial Communications>>CAN>>PCMCIA-CAN

Problem:
I have seen green, unpluggable screw terminal connections on some NI devices called COMBICON connectors. What purpose do they serve, and how do I know which size I need for my device?

Solution:
COMBICON connectors are plug connectors made by Phoenix Contact. They are used to provide convenient and easily swappable wire connections. The style that NI uses has screw terminal connections on one side and plug connectors on the other side. See the Phoenix Contact product page linked below for more information.

For example, NI stepper and servo power drives uses COMBICON connectors for external signal connections. If you wanted to connect a stepper motor with an encoder to a stepper drive, you would have a 5 position COMBICON connector for the motor inputs and an 8 position connector for the encoder inputs.  Once you screw the motor and encoder wires into the correct positions on the connectors, you can just plug and unplug the 2 COMBICON connectors from the drive without individually connecting and disconnecting 12 screw terminal wire connections every time.

COMBICON connectors come in different sizes, so if you misplace your connector and need to purchase a new one, be sure to purchase the correct size. You can purchase the a spare connector kit for most NI products that use COMBICON connectors. This kit should be listed under accessories section of that product's page on NI's website and it will be the proper size for your product. In the motion drive example above, the correct product to order would be the The MID Spare Connector Kit (Part Number 778134-01).
