Why Can't I Create a Customized Silent Installation Using the Generate Specfile Method for the New LabVIEW Platform DVDs?

Primary Software: LabVIEW Development Systems>>LabVIEW Professional Development System
Primary Software Version: 1.0
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: N/A

Problem:
Why can't I create a customized silent installation using the generate specfile method for the new LabVIEW Platform DVDs?

The software Suite Installer, when called using setup/h, shows the error, This Software suite installer invokes multiple software installers.

Solution:
Previously, with the single installer setup if you had multiple pieces of NI software to install, and wanted to do this silently, you would have to use batch-files, chain the installers together, and configure each single installer via spec files to install silent.

The platform DVD provides a convenient way to install a lot of NI software. However the option to customize the installation when running it silently is not supported with this new format. The setup.exe of the DVD can be run silently, but it will not accept any spec files. Hence it will install with the default options.

The reason for this is because the platform DVD has one master setup.exe to invoke the single installer’s setup.exe to create the chain effect mentioned earlier. However, the create spec file option is specific to one setup.exe.

The solution to this is to create a batch file.  You will be required to create a spec file for all of the single installers in the distribution directory of the DVD.  To learn about how to create a spec file, look at KnowledgeBase 4GGGDQH0: Automating the Installation of a Suited Installer and KnowledgeBase 4CJDP38M: Automating the Installation of a Single Installer.

If you feel this is too complex, it is possible to install a customized non-silent installation:
  1. Upload the DVD images to a central location.
  2. Get the individual user to install their particular requirements
  3. Inform the user where to locate the other images when the pop-up appears for the other DVDs.
