LabVIEW Support for VRML Files

Primary Software:
Primary Software Version: 8.6.1
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: N/A

Problem:
I am having trouble getting my VRML file to load using either the 3D Picture Controls VI or the Sensor Mapping VI. What kind of support does LabVIEW provide for VRML files and are there any limitations on the models that can be represented?

Solution:
LabVIEW 8.6.1 currently supports VRML files in VRML 97 and VRML 2.0 format. For all practical purposes, VRML 97 and VRML 2.0 are the same although there are some minor differences. When creating a VRML file, it is good practice to follow the guidelines we have provided in the Developer Zone Tutorial: Tips for Creating a Good VRML Model. In addition to the tips provided in the link, some modeling features are not supported by LabVIEW and are listed below:

Unsupported Features:
  • LOD
  • TimeSensor
  • TouchSensor
  • VisibilitySensor
  • PlaneSensor
  • SphereSensor
  • ProximitySensor
  • ColorInterpolator
  • CoordinateInterpolator
  • NormalInterpolator
  • OrientationInterpolator
  • PositionInterpolator
  • ScalarInterpolator
  • Sound
  • AudioClip
  • SCRIPT
  • Background
  • Extrusion
  • MovieTexture
Specific Unsupported Features Within Nodes:
  • Text Node:
    • maxExtent
    • length
  • FontStyle Node:
    • language
    • spacing
    • style
Note: BillBoard nodes will function the same as normal Group nodes.

Links for specifications of the VRML formats can be found in the related links section below.
