MAX Error 56 When Communicating With a LabVIEW Real-Time Controller

Primary Software: LabVIEW Modules>>Real-Time Module
Primary Software Version: 8.5
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: N/A
Hardware: CompactRIO>>Controllers, Compact FieldPoint>>Controllers, Compact FieldPoint>>Controllers, FieldPoint>>Controllers/Network Modules, Image Acquisition (IMAQ)>>Compact Vision System, PXI/CompactPCI>>Controllers

Problem:
I receive Error 56 in Measurement and Automation Explorer (MAX) when I try communicating with my Real-Time controller. My controller is connected with a cross-over cable. The error occurs in one or more of the following situations:
  1. Using the Real-Time Software Wizard to add/remove software from my controller.
  2. Changing the IP address of the controller.
  3. Expanding the software branch on the controller
Despite the error, I can still see the controller in MAX. Why does this error happen?

Solution:
This error is typically caused by specifying a gateway IP address for the controller when one does not exist. Change the gateway IP address on the real-time controller to 0.0.0.0 or leave it blank, as seen below.

Click on the Apply button followed by the Reboot button to put the changes into effect.

The gateway is used to route packets to outside networks. A typical Windows machine does not function as a gateway and causes the real-time controller to time out when it does not respond to the Real-Time controller's requests for a gateway.
