Determining Available Hardware Resources on Windows NT
Hardware: GPIB
Problem: How can I tell what GPIB resources are available in Windows NT?
Solution: To see what resources are available in Windows NT 4.0, follow these steps:
- Select Start»Administrative Tools»Windows NT Diagnostics.

- Select the Resources tab (the above diagram already indicates an installed GPIB board).
- At the bottom of the window, you can choose IRQ to view which interrupt resources are already in use. You can view I/O Port to view which base I/O addresses are already in use and you can also choose DMA to view which DMA channels are already in use.
- Ensure that Windows NT Diagnostics does not report any other devices that are assigned the same hardware resources as the AT-GPIB/TNT. If other devices are assigned to those same resources, you may need to remove that device or peripheral.
- Even though a resource setting is shown as NOT being in use by NT Diagnostics, there still exists the possibility that NT is not reporting its usage correctly. For example, just because IRQ 11 is not listed does not mean that some other device in the system isn't using it.
