Using a Phone to Troubleshoot Numeric Paging in Lookout

Primary Software: Lookout
Primary Software Version: 5.0
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software:

Problem: I am trying to use the Pager object in Lookout to send a numeric page using a modem. I looked at the tutorials for the Pager object and I still cannot get it to work. I am not sure whether the modem is dialing. Also, I am not sure whether I have the correct delay. Is there something that I can do to listen in on the communication?

Solution: After following the instructions in the Lookout Help and the tutorial links below, you can try two more methods.
  1. Monitor the serial port communications. Lookout can log what is sent and received on the serial port. Refer to the document linked below for more information about enabling this setting. In addition, third-party serial port monitoring programs are available.

  2. Attach a phone to the phone port on the modem and listen to the communication. Most modems have two phone jacks - one goes to the wall and the second one can be used to connect a phone. Also, most modems allow you to pick up the phone and listen to the communication. Lift the phone and activate the Pager object in Lookout. You can hear whether the modem is dialing. If there are any phone company error messages, you can hear them as well. Also, you can hear whether the message is sent at the correct time.

Note: Do not lift the phone when the modem is used to connect to another modem because it will interfere with the communication. When the Pager object is in numeric mode, it does not connect to another modem.
