Does Vision Builder for Automated Inspection (VBAI) Support Modbus Communication?

Primary Software: Vision Builder for Automated Inspection
Primary Software Version: 1.0
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: N/A

Problem:
I have created an inspection in Vision Builder for Automated Inspection (VBAI) and have several modbus devices I would like to communicate with from my inspection. Does VBAI support modbus communication?

Solution:
Yes, VBAI does support modbus TCP and serial communication protocols with master devices. In other words, VBAI can ONLY act as a modbus slave device.

To setup modbus communication first open the Communication Device Manager found at Tools » Communication Device Manager. Click the Help button for specific steps to configuring a new modbus device.

Now add the Modbus Slave step, found in the Communicate tab, to your inspection. Configure this step to read and write values from and to the local modbus registers. For information on the available controls for the Modbus Slave step see NI Vision Builder for Automated Inspection: Configuration Help article entitled Modbus Slave Controls. This can be located by selecting Help » Online Help...

Additionally, you are able to view the current values stored in the VBAI local modbus register. For details see the VBAI Help article Modbus Local Registers Terminal. You will also find the Modbus Slave FAQs article in the VBAI help which is useful when troubleshooting communication issues.
