Archived: Configuring Measurement Studio Help in Visual Studio 2010

This document has been archived and is no longer updated by National Instruments

Primary Software Version: 1.0
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: N/A

Problem:
I installed a version of Measurement Studio for Visual Studio 2010, but when I attempt to view the Measurement Studio Help, my browser launches and I receive a message stating that the page is not found or that the topic requested could not be found in local help.

Page not found

Why does this happen and how can I resolve the issue?

Solution:
The Visual Studio 2010 help system is architected in a way that prevents smooth integration of third-party help if the help system is not set up correctly prior to Measurement Studio installation. To set up and correctly install the Measurement Studio help, complete the following steps:
  1. To set up the Visual Studio help system, you must first download and install one of the MSDN help topics from Microsoft's website using Visual Studio's Help Library Manager.
    1. In Visual Studio, navigate to Help»Manage Help Settings to launch the Help Library Manager.
    2. In the Help Library Manager, select Install content from online.
    1. Install any help topic you would like. The Visual Studio 2010»Visual Studio Fundamentals topic is one of the more helpful topics and is one of the smaller downloads, but any content can be selected. The purpose of this is to force Visual Studio to configure its help system, so the content you select for this step does not matter.
    2. Click Add next to the desired topic and click Update to download the help.
Download VS Fundamentals
  1. You will also need to configure Visual Studio to use local help. If you choose to view the Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 help online, the help viewer launches the MSDN web site, which does not contain the National Instruments help. From the Help Library Manager, as seen in step 1, click on Choose online or local help, and then select I want to use local help.
  1. Once you have configured the Visual Studio help by adding any MSDN help topic in the Help Library Manager, you can now install the Measurement Studio Help.
    1. Navigate to the Measurement Studio Help Configuration Utility, located at C:\Program Files\National Instruments\Shared\MeasurementStudio\Help Configuration Utility\HelpConfigurationUtility.exe by default.
    1. Ensure that all of the Measurement Studio Help components are selected and click Install to install the Measurement Studio Help.
    2. Once the help has been installed, the status area at the bottom of the utility will read Done.
Now that the help is installed, you can open the Measurement Studio Help from Visual Studio or
from the shortcut in the Windows Start menu to see the Measurement Studio Help in the Help Viewer.

Note: If you have any NI driver software that includes a .NET 4.0 Driver API, it will show up in the Help Configuration Utility as well. You can install the help components for the driver using the same method as above. See National Instruments .NET Driver Support for information about which NI drivers have APIs that support .NET 4.0.

If you do not have access to the Help Configuration Utility to complete the last step above, you can manually add Measurement Studio or NI driver help components by following the steps outlined in KnowledgeBase 5KSFAHQW:Accessing the .NET 4.0 API Help Documentation for NI Driver Software.
