LabVIEW Real-Time (RT) Installer Does not Install LabVIEW RT on my Host Computer

Problem:
When I try to install LabVIEW RT 8.20 or 8.21, I get a Cannot Install symbol from the installer for the LabVIEW RT (see Figure 1 below). Why won't LabVIEW RT install?

Solution:
This is a known issue with host computers that already have an installation of the NI-Serial driver. This problem can be verified by checking the version of NI-Serial in the ReadMe file. The ReadMe file can be found uder Start»Programs»National Instruments»NI-Serial»Readme. On systems running NI-Serial version 3.2 or greater, the LabVIEW RT v8.20 installer run on the host computer will have the display shown below (NI-Serial 3.3 or greater will have the same affect on LabVIEW RT v8.21).

There are some ways to put the host computer in a state where LabVIEW RT can install correctly.

  1. Uninstall the version of NI-Serial currently installed on the system by using the Control Panel.
  2. Install the NI-Serial for RT component using the NI-Serial installer. The version for the NI-Serial for RT installer should be the same as the NI-Serial currently on the host computer.
  3. Upgrade the installation for NI-Serial. Be sure that the installation includes NI-Serial support for LabVIEW RT (default setting).
