How Do I Set the LabVIEW Execution Target to be a Remote FPGA Card on an RT System?

Hardware: Reconfigurable I/O (RIO)>>R Series

Problem:
I have a remote PXI system running Real-Time and I am writing an application on my desktop PC that will run on the FPGA card in the RT system. How do I setup my system to run the code on the remote FPGA card and not just in Real-Time?

Solution:
If the execution target selection looks like the image below then you will need to configure the VISA settings on you system, as detailed in the following steps:

Firstly refer to the 78XXR user manual, the 7831R manual is linked below. Then check the following points:

1. Check that the same versions of NI-RIO are installed on the RT target and the host PC. You can do this by looking under the software tab in MAX for the local machine and the remote target.
2. In MAX under remote systems, check that the RT target appears and the IP address has been assigned correctly. Then check under devices and interfaces that the RIO device is listed (e.g. 7831R).
3. In MAX under My System » Software » NI-VISA » VISA settings select "show all PXI/PCI devices accessible to VISA - Click SAVE
4. In MAX under My System » Software » NI-VISA » VISA settings » remote - place a tick next to your remote system - Click SAVE
5. In MAX under Remote Systems » RT device » Software » NI-VISA » VISA settings select "show all PXI/PCI devices accessible to VISA - Click SAVE
6. In MAX under Remote Systems » RT device » Software » NI-VISA » VISA server » security - enter a "*" in the remote addresses allowed box - Click SAVE
7. In MAX under Remote Systems » RT device » devices and interfaces » RIO Devices - select the FPGA card and enter a VISA alias e.g. "7831R" - Click SAVE
8. Close MAX and if prompted save the changes
9. Start LV... the execution target should be as in the image below. Select the FPGA card on the remote system for either Emulation (FPGA Emulator) or VHDL compile and download (FPGA Device):
