Primary Software: Other NI Software>>NI Volume License Manager
Primary Software Version: 2.0
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: N/A
Problem: When I try to start my NI Volume License Manager (NI VLM), I get the error
Unable to Start License Server. What are the possible causes and potential solutions?
Solution: There are multiple problems that can cause the
Unable to Start License Server error. Common causes and solutions include:
- If you have other license servers running, it could be using the same port that NI VLM uses, causing NI VLM to not be able to start. NI VLM runs by default on port 27000. If this is the case, you can change the port that NI VLM uses by following the instructions in KnowledgeBase 34ICSJ9O: Can NI Volume License Manager or FLEXlm Run on a Configurable Port?.
- If you have installed software which uses NI License Manager (NILM) on the NI VLM server machine (such as LabVIEW), the debug log may need to be turned on for proper NI VLM functionality. This can be done by opening NI VLM, selecting Options»Preferences..., selecting the Policies tab, and checking the Enable Debug Log checkbox.
- If you are using NI VLM on Windows 2000 there is a known issue when the path to a service's executable contains spaces. See KnowledgeBase 3CTA3K6E: Why Do I Get a Message "Unable to Start Server" when using NI VLM on Windows 2000? for more information and the solution.
- It is possible that NI VLM is unable to load the license file properly, and thus is unable to serve licenses over your network. Try first refreshing NI VLM by going to Options»Refresh, and if that doesn't solve the problem, try reinstalling the license file by going to Options»Install License File. If you are still seeing this behavior, it is possible that another license server is running on your NI VLM server machine. Please see KnowledgeBase 2IK8QGTJ: License Server Unable to Reload Licenses or Update License Server for more information.
- If you are using Windows 2000, you may get this error as well as Error 193: %1 is not a valid Win32 application if the path to the service's executable contains spaces. See KnowledgeBase 3CTA3K6E: Why Do I Get a Message "Unable to Start Server" when using NI VLM on Windows 2000? for more information.
