How can I avoid Excel crash when I do "merge cells" with data originating from DIAdem?

Primary Software: DIAdem
Primary Software Version: 9.1
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: N/A

Problem: DIAdem's Excel export is meant to produce files that are 100% compatible
with the specification of the Excel file format (called Biff 8) as far as
it is publicly available. However, Microsoft keeps on developing their
software and might in future versions of Excel exploit hidden features
of the file or even build in new features. This makes it difficult to
keep up with that file.
Currently one problem is known (since Excel 2002): If you read with Excel
a file that was written by DIAdem, then Excel takes all the data correctly.
But if you want to merge cells, then Excel will crash.

Solution: The crash can be avoided using the following workaround:
Just store the data with Excel (preferably by overwriting the file that
was provided by DIAdem. Then you have an Excel file written by Excel and
the merge problem will no longer occur.
