How Do I Personalize My Front Panel and Front Panel Icon Colors?

Primary Software:
Primary Software Version: 2011
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: N/A

Problem:
I want to be able to change the color of my Front Panel background and icons, and use images for the background like I can for my computer desktop. How can I personalize my Front Panel?

Solution:
In LabVIEW 2009 and later, there are three ways to change the look of your Front Panel user interface:
  • Change the color of the Front Panel and the objects on it.

You can change the color of the Front Panel through the Set Color tool on the Tools palette by clicking View»Tools Palette. Alternatively, you can access the Tools palette by right-clicking your Front Panel while pressing <Ctrl-Shift>. The Set Color tool is at the bottom of the palette, and shows a paintbrush with two color boxes. You can click this box to change your cursor to a paintbrush, as shown in the following image:

You can change the colors by clicking the box itself, or you can right-click the object layer you want to change, and select a color specific to that object, as shown in the following image:

The reason there are two color boxes is that certain items on the Front Panel automatically default to one color or the other. The following image illustrates this using a Numeric Control as an example. Most of the object layers default to the background color, but the increment and decrement buttons use the accent color:

Using this technique, you can change the color of any object on the Front Panel.

  • Change the color of the Front Panel and other environment objects.

Complete the following steps to change the color of the Front Panel:
    1. Select Tools»Options to display the Options dialog box.
    2. Select Environment from the Category list.
    3. Remove the checkmark from the Use default color checkbox in the Colors section.
    4. Click the color rectangle below the Front Panel label to display the color picker.

In LabVIEW 2011 or later, select the Classic Object color under User to revert to the color scheme used in previous versions. Classic Object has Red, Blue, and Green values of 179.

  • Change the background of the Front Panel.

You can do this by right-clicking the scroll bar and selecting Properties to open the Pane Properties window, as seen in following two images:

Under the Appearance tab, you can set the background to any of the preset options, or browse for an image on your computer. Once you have selected your background image, use the Position drop-down menu to select whether you want your image to be set to Stretch, Center, or Tile. Click OK to apply your selection and close the Pane Properties window.

You can combine the previous three methods to achieve a very customized Front Panel.

In LabVIEW 8.6 or earlier, complete the following steps to change the Front Panel background color:
  1. Select Tools»Options to display the Options dialog box.
  2. Select Colors from the Category list.
  3. Remove the checkmark from the Use default colors checkbox.
  4. Click the color rectangle associated with the Front Panel label to display the color picker.
  5. Choose the desired background color.
