Measurement and Automation Explorer Does Not Auto-Discover my Real-Time System under Windows XP?Primary Software: Utility Software>>Measurement & Automation ExplorerPrimary Software Version: 2.2 Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A Secondary Software: N/A
Problem: I have a Real-Time controller that is placed on the same subnet as my host. I refresh Measurement and Automation Explorer (MAX) and view the Remote Systems tab, but no controllers are being discovered. What could cause this behavior? Solution: Windows XP introduced a new Internet Connection Firewall. When enabled {Control Panel>>Network Connections>>Local Area Network>>Properties>>Advanced}, it will filter out the necessary UDP packets for MAX to be able to discover RT systems on the local subnet. Two known issues will occur depending upon the currently installed Service Pack:
RT systems are originally discovered in MAX. However, when software is being updated, the RT system will reboot into a safe mode state and not be re-discovered by MAX.
No RT systems are discovered in MAX. To find a system that is already configured with an IP address, simply Right-Click on Remote Systems and select Create New. This will manually place that system in the Remote Systems listing and all tasks will function properly. The only solution for a Windows XP SP1 user to find a system that is not configured on the network (i.e. boots up for the first time with an IP Address of 0.0.0.0) is to disable the firewall temporarily during the configuration process.
