What Does Headless Operation Mean?

Primary Software: LabVIEW Modules>>Real-Time Module
Primary Software Version: 7.1
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: N/A
Hardware: PXI/CompactPCI, CompactRIO, Compact FieldPoint

Problem:
I was reading the documentation on the Real-Time Series Compact FieldPoint Controllers, as well as the PXI Embedded Controllers and the Compact RIO Real-Time Controllers, and I ran across a paragraph explaining that they are designed for industrial control applications that can perform a headless operation. What does "headless operation" mean?

Solution:
Headless Operation is a term used to describe an application that runs on a system that has no monitor, keyboard, or mouse attached to it. Headless devices are embedded systems without peripherals. An application deployed on a Compact FieldPoint system, a PXI system, or a CompactRIO system can be disconnected from the network or host computer and still run its embedded application. With FieldPoint, PXI, and CompactRIO you can create rugged real-time applications and deploy them as “headless” stand-alone systems. In order to have a headless operation, it is necessary to have a software real-time system (i.e. LabVIEW Real-Time) on the controller that is going to be deployed. To learn more about Real-Time, please click on the tutorial linked below.  The most common type of a "headless" operation on a target involves creating a start-up executable that will run on the target when it is powered-on.
