ActiveX Controls Evaluation Message Box Appears after Installing Measurement Studio

Primary Software: Measurement Studio>>Visual Basic Support
Primary Software Version: 7.0
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: N/A

Problem: After installing a new copy of Measurement Studio on my machine, I dropped a Measurement Studio user interface (UI) control in Visual Basic and received the following message:

"You have 30 days to evaluate a newer version of this ActiveX control. After 30 days, you can revert back to the licensed version of your control. Contact your local branch office or visit the NI Online Store to upgrade your version of Measurement Studio."
This evaluation message appears only once - the first time that I dropped a UI control. I did not see the message again until 30 days later. The message began to appear every 5 minutes as long as I had a Measurement Studio UI control on a Visual Basic form. Why do I get an evaluation message when I ran a licensed installer?

Solution: Run the Measurement Studio License Fixer Utility (attached below) for the version of Measurement Studio you wish to use to quickly revert back to your licensed controls or to fix a broken license.

To stop receiving evaluation messages and revert back to your licensed controls, follow these simple steps:

  1. Unzip the contents of MeasurementStudioLicenseFixer.zip and read the MStudioLicenseFixer.txt for instructions.

  2. Run MStudioLicenseFixer.exe.

  3. Select the controls that need to be fixed. You can fix the following controls:

    • 3D Graph control
    • Analysis controls
    • User Interface controls (knob, button, 2D graph, numeric edit, and slide)
    • VISA control
    • Serial control.

Additional Information:
If Measurement Studio controls are displaying evaluation behavior, then the machine might already have newer versions of the Measurement Studio controls. This situation might occur if you previously installed a Measurement Studio Demo version or another National Instruments product that puts a new version of the unlicensed Measurement Studio ActiveX controls on the machine. When you install an older version of Measurement Studio, the installer does not replace the newer controls with older versions of the controls. However, the installer installs the older license on the machine. The machine then has newer controls with an old license.

This behavior might be inconvenient but it is also how the software was designed to behave. The Measurement Studio ActiveX controls installer lets you use the new UI controls for evaluation purposes for 30 days and then gives you the option to switch back to the functionality of the older control.

The License Fixer Utility also repairs broken licenses. The control has a broken license if you have a licensed copy of Measurement Studio, but some of the controls do not let you use the functionality of your licensed version. For example, the following scenario produces this behavior:

  1. Install a licensed copy of Measurement Studio 1.0.

  2. Install Measurement Studio 6.0 Demo or another National Instruments product that installs the Measurement 6.0 controls. The control now behaves as an evaluation control for 30 days. After 30 days, a dialog box appears that provides you the option to revert back to the licensed version of the control.

  3. On the dialog box, select "OK" to revert back to the licensed version of the control.

  4. Install the licensed version of Measurement Studio 6.0.
