Problem: How can I assign the ports from my National Instruments serial card to be COM1 and COM2 instead of the built-in ports on the motherboard? Solution: Windows NT Run "Ports" from control panel and rename the existing COM1 and COM2 (from the motherboard) to COM3 and COM4 (for example). If you reboot with this you will see COM1 through COM4. Go into the BIOS setup and change the motherboard COM names to COM3 and COM4. That should take COM1 and COM2 out of ports, thus making them available for you NI serial card's ports. Run NI-Ports and change the ports of the NI Serial card to com1 and com2. Windows 2000/XP/Vista Go to Start » Settings » Control Panel » System » Hardware » Device Manager (or Start » Control Panel » ... depending on your Start Menu configuration). You can also get to the System Properties menu by holding the Windows key and hitting the Pause/Break key. Under "Ports," select the port you would like to change and open the "Properties" dialog box by right-clicking on that port. Go to Port Settings » Advanced and select the COM port number to assign it to the physical port. After making each change, you will need to reboot your system.
