How to Use 985x CAN C-Series Modules with a cRIO VxWorks ControllerHardware: Industrial Communications>>CAN>>cRIO-9852, Industrial Communications>>CAN>>NI 9853
Problem: I am trying to use a NI 985x CAN Module for CompactRIO with a cRIO VxWorks controller, however, I get the following error message and the NI-CAN driver does not appear as an option while installing software on the cRIO real time controller. What could be wrong? The NI cRIO-9852 and NI cRIO-9853 C-Series modules are not supported on the NI cRIO-9072 or cRIO-NI 9074 platforms. Please visit ni.com/info and type in infocode ext4u9 to get an updated version of the driver that enables this support.Solution: NI-CAN is the driver for all NI CAN plug-in devices like PCI/PXI/PCMCIA and USB and currently supports only the following operating systems: Windows VISTA/XP/2000 and ETS Pharlap. The Pharlap operating system runs on all cRIO-9002 and 9004 controllers, other cRIO controllers including integrated models use the VxWorks operating system. There is no NI-CAN Support for the VxWorks real-time operating system. Thus NI-CAN is not an installer option. However, the 985x cRIO CAN modules can read and write CAN frames using the NI-985x driver on VxWorks controllers. The NI-985x driver is separate from the NI-CAN driver. The NI-985x driver makes the 985x C Series modules available for creation in the project explorer. It also installs support for the CAN FPGA I/O node, which is used to read and write frames to the CAN bus. The NI-985x driver normally installs with the NI-RIO driver, but you can download and install the latest version from the link below. Converting the data in the CAN frames to engineering units can be done with the Frame Channel Conversion Library. This allows the Frames from the I/O node to be converted to Channels for use with the NI CAN Channel API, and vice versa.
