Problem: What is a disconnected license file? Solution: With NI Volume License Manager, the end user’s software checks NI VLM for permission to use the software each time the product launches. In the case that a computer is not able to communicate with NI VLM, the administrator can create a disconnected license file for that particular computer. The disconnected license file will contain the permissions for all the products assigned in NI VLM. A disconnected license is granted on a per-computer basis. The client computer ID must be in the computer’s properties page in NI VLM in order to generate a disconnected license file because the disconnected license file is created for that particular computer’s computer ID as opposed to that computer's name. When the administrator generates the disconnected license, the license contains the permissions currently assigned to that computer in NI VLM. With NI VLM 2.0 and later, the administrator can also include named-user permissions in a disconnected license file. However, disconnected license files are still created for a particular computer. The administrator is also prompted to set an expiration date for the disconnected license or to set the disconnected license to not expire. Once the disconnected license file has been generated, the administrator will give the license to the client computer or to the client computer’s owner. Thus the client computer never has to be connected to NI VLM. The license file is relatively small so it will fit on a disk or as an attachment in an e-mail. On the client computer, the end-user should drag and drop the disconnected license file into NI License Manager (Start»Programs»National Instruments»NI License Manager) to install the license file. Once the expiration date of the disconnected license file is reached, the products included in the disconnected license file will no longer work. To recover a disconnected license back into the general pool of licenses, the NI VLM administrator should right-click the disconnected computer in NI VLM and choose Reconnect. A confirmation dialog will appear asking the administrator to confirm that the software was either removed from the client computer or that the disconnected license had expired. If you have many disconnected computers, consider using NI VLM Import Utility to ease the collection of computer IDs and distribution of disconnected license files.
