Network Settings For Using Windows XP Remote Desktop With A PXI Controller

Hardware: Compact FieldPoint>>Controllers

Problem:
What network settings do I need to change on my PC and my PXI Controller in order to use Windows XP Remote Desktop to control the PXI Controller from my PC?

Solution:
In order to control a PXI Controller from a PC using Windows XP Remote Desktop, the PXI Controller and PC need to be on the same network. To do this, certain network settings on the controller and the PC need to be manually configured. The following steps describe how to do this, and assume you are connected from your PC directly to your PXI Controller through an ethernet cable :
  1. Access the network settings on your PXI Controller by navigating to Start » Control Panel » Network and Internet Connections » Network Connections
  2. Right-click on Local Area Connection and select Properties
  3. Scroll down and select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and select Properties as shown below

  4. Select Use the following IP address. You will need to manually set an IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway. The subnet mask and default gateway are not used when two computers are directly connected, so it does not matter what you set these to (as long as the values are valid). For the IP address, you need to make sure that you choose a valid IP value, as some IP addresses are reserved. You also need to know which parts of the IP address identify the network, and which parts identify the host. For example, assume that we have an IP address set up as 192.168.1.1, as shown below. The first 3 octets (192.168.1) identify the network, and the last octet (.1) identifies the host. Contact your network administrator for additional information.

  5. Select OK to implement your changes, and repeat the previous 4 steps on the PC, making sure that the network octets of the IP address match the controller's, and the host octets are different. For example, if the screenshot above are the settings used for the PXI controller, the PC could have an IP address of 192.168.1.2 . Again, contact your network administrator for additional information.
  6. Once the controller and PC have both been configured, on the PC navigate to Start » Programs » Accessories » Remote Desktop Connection . Type in the IP address you originally set for the controller next to Computer :  and select Connect. You should now have access to your PXI controller.
