Lookout Crashes with Too Many Characters in the Data Member Description

Primary Software: Lookout
Primary Software Version: 5.1
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: N/A

Problem: I configured a logical alarm based on a boolean object's data member, and now Lookout will not stop crashing.

In the data member configuration page, I tried entering a very long description message (around 180 characters) for a boolean data member configured to generate alarms. After saving the configuration and switching to run-mode, Lookout instantly crashed after the first the alarm.

Now I cannot open any Lookout process, or even create a new one without Lookout crashing. What should I do? Do I need to reinstall?

Solution: This is a known issue with a workaround to reinstallation.

Firstly, do not use descriptions that are composed of too many characters.

After the first crash, you will most likely be unable to open any Lookout processes, or create new processes without Lookout crashing.

Here is the solution:

  1. Close the Lookout environment
  2. Navigate to the database folder through the Windows Explorer
    (The default location is C:\Program Files\National Instruments\Lookout 5.1\database)

  3. Delete the ALE file inside that folder (That file should regenerate itself once Lookout restarts)

You should now be able to open Lookout process files as before.

Note: Trying to delete the ALE file sometimes gives an error saying that the file is in use. Just wait a few minutes and try again.
