With Which USB Specification Do the GPIB-USB Devices Comply?

Hardware: GPIB>>External Controllers/Convertors>>GPIB-USB, Instrument Connectivity Other>>USB>>GPIB-USB

Problem:
I am using an older specification of USB and want to use a GPIB-USB device. Which USB specification does the GPIB-USB-B support. What about the GPIB-USB-HS?

Solution:
The GPIB-USB-B controller complies with the USB 1.1 specification, and it is compatible with USB 2.0 specification. Thus, it can be used with USB 1.1 and 2.0 ports and hubs. However, it will run at a maximum of 12 Mbps, which is Full-Speed.

The GPIB-USB-HS controller complies with the USB 2.0 specification, and therefore can be used in USB 1.1 and 2.0 ports and hubs. It will run at high speed data transfer rates when it is plugged into a USB 2.0 port, but only full speed rates when plugged into a USB 1.1 port.

USB Basics:
  • USB has 3 Different speeds
    • Low Speed: Transfer rate for this speed is 1.5Mb/s
    • Full Speed: Transfer rate for this speed is 12Mb/s. This transfer rate is now called 'USB'.
    • High Speed: Transfer rate for this speed is 480Mb/s
  • Only USB 2.0 is capable of data transfer rates corresponding to 'High Speed'.
  • USB 2.0 can also operate at Full Speed and Low Speed which makes it backward compatible with USB 1.0 and 1.1.
Note:  It is possible to tell the data transfer speed based on the color of the LED, see Related Links section below.
