Can I Use More Than 40 Digital I/O Lines on the cRIO-9151 R-Series Expansion Chassis?

Hardware: CompactRIO>>Chassis (Backplanes)>>cRIO-9151

Problem:
I'm using an R-Series board in conjunction with a cRIO-9151 R-Series expansion chassis. I've noticed that the digital connector the chassis is connected to only has 40 digital I/O lines available. Does this mean that the total number of channels on digital I/O modules in my expansion chassis can not be more than 40?

Solution:
When using the cRIO-9151 R-Series expansion chassis you are not limited to the number of digital lines on the connector of your R-Series card. In the case of cRIO modules that have more than 8 channels (such as the cRIO-9476), there is not a direct connection between the signals and the digital ports on your R-Series device. You can think of the expansion chassis as a separate system that shares data with the R-Series card over the digital lines on the connector.

For example, you could have a cRIO-9476 (32 chan) in all 4 slots and have 128 digital output lines in your expansion chassis. Some of the digital modules that have 8 or less channels (like the cRIO-9401) operate in parallel mode which means that there is some direct connection between the digital signals and the ports on your R-Series device. Since these are only the modules with 8 or less channels, even if you had an expansion chassis filled with these modules you would not exceed 40 digital lines.
