Can I use FPGA Emulation Mode in a PXI System with a R Series Expansion Chassis for cRIO?

Primary Software: LabVIEW Development Systems>>Professional Development System
Primary Software Version: 8.5
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: Driver Software>>NI-DAQmx
Hardware: CompactRIO>>Chassis (Backplanes)>>cRIO-9151

Problem:
I have a cRIO Expansion Chassis NI-9151 connected to an R-Series PXI-7833R card. I am trying to use the "Use Target Hardware for I/O" option to emulate I/O of the modules on the cRIO expansion chassis, but instead of the actual signals, I seem to be getting random data back. Isn't this option designed to work with R-Series PXI or PCI hardware?

Solution:
In the Project explorer, when you right-click the FPGA Target and select Properties. On the General settings menu, there is a pull-down menu of Emulator options. There are three choices available:
  1. Off
  2. On - Use Random Data for Inputs
  3. Use Target Hardware for I/O
If you are using an R-Series PXI or PCI hardware, the third option is available for use. However, if you use a cRIO Expansion Chassis and modules to emulate hardware I/O, Option 2, which uses random data, will be used even if you select Option 3.

The reason this occurs is that third parties can develop cRIO Modules and it is not possible for National Instruments to provide emulation access to hardware in the custom input nodes. Therefore, for cRIO backplanes only the second option for FPGA emulation is available, so the hardware input nodes output random data during emulation.
