Timed or Instant Shutdown and Restart of Remote Windows PXI Controller

Hardware: PXI/CompactPCI

Problem:
I have a remote PXI controller with Windows that I remote desktop in to. When I click on Start there is no option for shutdown. How can I shutdown or restart my remote Windows PXI system?

Solution:
When using remote desktop to remote into a PXI controller that has Windows, the option to shutdown or restart the PXI controller from the start menu is not available.

In order to gain the ability to shutdown or restart a remote Windows system, you have to create a desktop shortcut to the Windows dos command that performs the shutdown or restart.
  1. Right-click on the desktop of the remote system and choose New»Shortcut and the Create Shortcut Wizard will appear.

  2. In the Type the location of the item: box type in shutdown and one of the following parameters
    1. -s to shutdown the remote system
    2. -r to restart the remote system
    3. -t # optional parameter to include timer before shutdown or restart. # is the number of seconds before performing the action.
An example string to type in would be shutdown -s -t 10 which would cause the PXI controller to shutdown after 10 seconds.
  3. After typing in the command, click Next.
  4. On the next screen in the Type a name for this shortcut box type in a name for the shortcut (Restart or Shutdown)
  5. The shortcut will now be on your desktop, but will not have an icon associated with it. To add the shutdown or restart icon to the new shortcut, right-click on it and choose Properties

  6. The properties for your shortcut will appear, choose the Shortcut tab.
  7. Click on the Change Icon button and the Change Icon window will appear where you can choose the correct shutdown or restart icon.
Now you have desktop shortcuts on your remote system to shutdown and restart the PXI controller without having to go to the system to restart or turn it off. If you so not want to make the shortcuts you can just type in the shutdown and restart command text in the Start»Run box.
