Benchmarks for Buffered Counter Input with M-Series DevicesHardware: Multifunction DAQ (MIO)>>M Series>>PCI-6251, Multifunction DAQ (MIO)>>M Series>>USB-6251, Multifunction DAQ (MIO)>>Portable>>USB-6218
Problem: What are the maximum rates I can expect to attain when doing buffered counter input with my M-Series device? Solution: The following benchmarks were obtained on a computer with a Dell Optiplex GX280 running Windows XP SP2 with a Pentium 4 3.2 GHz processor and 1 GB RAM. Direct Memory Access (DMA) channels were used for the operations performed in the benchmarks. No other operations were running while these benchmarks were performed, so there was no other PCI bus traffic during this measurement.
The difference in performance with the USB-621X device occurs because the counter FIFO was increased to 1024 samples, from the 2 sample FIFO on NI 622X/623X/625X/628X devices. These numbers will be similar for other operations such as pulse width measurement, period measurement, or event counting. These benchmarks are system dependent, and will be different for every computer. These benchmarks are, however, a good estimate of the frequency of signals that you can expect to acquire using a similar device.
