How to Access Ports C & D on a PCI-6533 Using an ER-16

Hardware: Digital I/O (DIO)>>High-Speed>>PXI-6533

Problem: I have a PCI-6533 (PCI-DIO-32HS) that is connected to an ER-16. The ER-16 only uses ports A and B. How can I get to port C and D to do other digital I/O? I looked in the catalog and did not see a way to do this with National Instruments cables and adaptors.

Solution: National instruments currently does not make cables and connector blocks that will explicitly fit this purpose.

There are two possible solutions:

  1. The ER-16 has two 26-pin ribbon cable connectors (J2 and J3). J2 serves as an additional input to control the ER-16 and J3 is an output that routes the remaining digital lines back to it. In this case, J3 would have access to ports C and D. To connect to J3, you have two options:
    1. Use the NB7 cable, but unfortunately we do not offer a terminal or connector block that interfaces directly with that cable. In this situation, you would need to create your own connector block or find another way to connect to the NB7 cable.
    2. Make a custom cable that interfaces with one of our connector blocks (like the CB-50 or CB-50LP) and the J3 connector. This would be basically have to be a 26-pin to 50-pin ribbon cable.

  2. The second solution is to use the SC-2052. The SC-2052 has two 50-pin connectors that are matched pin for pin as well as four 26-pin connectors that break out each port on the PCI-DIO-32HS. In this application, the output of the DIO-32HS would go into one 50-pin connector (with the SH6850 cable) and the ER-16 would use the other 50-pin connector. Ports C and D would then be available in individual 26-pin connectors. Connecting to those would be similar to connecting to J3 above. Ports A and B also have individual 26-pin connector on the SC-2052s, but they would remain unused as those ports are already used by the ER-16.
