How Do I Deactivate or Remove my License for an NI Product?

Primary Software: Other NI Software>>NI License Manager
Primary Software Version: 4.0
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: N/A

Problem:
How do I deactivate, remove, or disable my license for an NI product? I want to use the license somewhere else or just remove the license.

Solution:
You are not required to notify National Instruments when you deactivate a product. NI does not allow or disallow future activations dependent upon a previous deactivation. Common reasons for deactivation include moving the license to another computer and inadvertent activations.  Because of this, it is not required to deactivate products from a damaged or inaccessible hard drive.

With NI License Manager 3.1 and higher, you can deactivate products within NI License Manager. To accomplish this:

NI License Manager 4.0 and higher:
  1. Open the NI License Manager utility, located at Start»Programs»National Instruments»NI License Manager
  2. Go to the Local Licenses tab for local or disconnected licenses.
  3. Expand the software package you wish to deactivate.  The activated project should have a solid green icon next to it.
  4. Click to highlight the software that you would like to deactivate
  5. Click Deactivate as shown in the image below

NI License Manager 3.1:
  1. Open the NI License Manager utility, located at Start»Programs»National Instruments»NI License Manager
  2. Expand the software package you wish to deactivate. The activated product should have a solid green icon next to it
  3. Right-click on the activated product that you want to deactivate and choose Deactivate
  4. If you are sure you want to deactivate the product, select Yes

This will revert the product to an unactivated state. To use the product again, you must first reactivate the product.

If the product is using a disconnected license generated by NI Volume License Manager, you can deactivate the license by right-clicking the product and select Uninstall License File. The caveat is that other products using the disconnected license will be deactivated as well. To fix this, you must generate a new disconnected license file from the Volume License Manager server.

NI License Manager earlier than 3.1:

Note:  Do not do this with NILM 4.0 or greater, you will not be able to access server licenses if the licenses folder is hidden.

With NI License Manager versions earlier than 3.1, you must remove the license file manually. Steps to follow are:
  1. Close all National Instruments products.
  2. Open My Computer.
  3. Navigate to the License folder, located in the following directory:
    • Windows XP - C:\Program Files\National Instruments\Shared\License Manager\Licenses.
    • Windows 7 - C:\ProgramData\National Instruments\License Manager\Licenses
  4. Find and move the license file to your desktop. In order to find the right license file, the naming convention is <Application Name>_<Product Name>_PKG_<Version>.lc. For example, if you wanted to remove the LabVIEW Application Builder license file, you would need to remove LabVIEW_AppBuilder_PKG_090000.lc. Note that the file extension may be either .lic or .lc
  5. Open NI License Manager and check to see if the product is still in the list.
  6. If the product is removed, delete the license file. Otherwise, move the license file back and repeat steps 4 and 5 to find the correct license file
If you delete a license file and need to activate and use the product again in the future, you can download the default license files from ni.com/downloads. Search Default License File for the complete list. For some products the Default License is also called the Evaluation License. License files are stored by product and version and searching with those terms will refine the results.
