Generic Firewire Functionality of the IEEE-1394 Boards Hardware: Instrument Connectivity Other>>IEEE 1394>>PCI-8252, Instrument Connectivity Other>>IEEE 1394>>PCI-8252 with Vision Acquisition Software, Instrument Connectivity Other>>IEEE 1394>>PXI-8252
Problem: I'd like to use my NI Frame Grabber for generic IEEE-1394 functionality (not the NI-IMAQ for IEEE-1394 camera functions). What driver do I need? Solution: The PCI-8252, PXI-8252, PCI-8254R, and PCIe-8255R are OHCI-compliant IEEE-1394 interfaces. OHCI (Open Host Controller Interface) is a standard by which most modern operating systems, including Windows XP, can interface to the card with generic drivers. Thus you do not need any specific NI-related drivers to do typical FireWire functions on the drive, such as connecting an external hard drive (Windows automatically includes drivers for hard drives as well). When you install the board in the PCI/PXI bus, Windows will automatically detect the board and install generic firewire drivers to interact with the board. If you would then like to do image acquisition, it would require the NI-IMAQdx driver to access a DCAM-compliant FireWire camera with our software in LabVIEW or C.
