How do I Setup an IP Address for my NI WLS/ENET 9163?

Hardware: Multifunction DAQ (MIO)>>Wireless DAQ>>WLS-9163

Problem:
I have my network card configured with a static IP address and I have connected a WLS/ENET-9163 device directly to the card. I am unable to discover the sleeve through MAX and a physical reset of the device does not help. How can I discover and add the sleeve? What is the device's default IP address so I can add it manually?

Solution:
All WLS/ENET-9163 devices first look for a DHCP server and when that is not available they will search for a local connection.

In this case, the WLS/ENET-9163 device is using a link-local address, defined in Request for Comments: 3927 (see related links), and your computer is set to static. This generally happens because your static IP address most likely exists on a different subnet from link-local addresses, which are on the 169.254.xxx.xxx subnet. Due to the fact that they are in different subnets, they cannot talk to each other.

The user must use a standard CAT5 ethernet cable between WLS device and the PC or HUB which is contrary to the normal use of a crossover cable.  The NI WLS/ENET-9163 device has a built-in switch in the hardware that handles the need for a crossover cable.  Also be sure to enable DHCP in your network connections properties.

To enable DHCP, follow these steps:
  1. In Windows XP, click Start»Control Panel.
  2. If you are viewing in Category View, click Switch to Classic View on the left side.
  3. Click Network Connections.
  4. Right-click your network card, and choose Properties.
  5. In the scroll box, scroll to Internet Properties, select it, and click Properties.
  6. If Use the following IP address is checked, copy the information down on a piece of paper.  You will need this later to reconfigure your computer with a static IP address.
  7. Click the Obtain an IP address automatically option, and select OK.
  8. Click OK to close the internet properties box.
  9. Reboot your 9163, and attempt to reconfigure it.
  10. Once your device is configured, disconnect it from your computer and plug it in to its permanenet network location.
  11. Follow steps 1 through 8 above to navigate back to the Internet Properties and reconfigure your network card with its original settings.
If the NI WLS/ENET-9163 device cannot be discovered in MAX after connecting the device directly to the computer, attempt to connect to the device using a router.  The router can assign an IP address to the device using the DHCP server which may allow the device to be discovered within MAX.

The NI WLS/ENET 9163 device manual (linked below) can provide additional troubleshooting steps to discover the device.
