Why Are My VME Instruments Listed Under "Unassigned VME Devices" in MAX?

Hardware: VXI/VME/MXI

Problem: I have a VME or VXI system that uses VME devices. Everything used to work fine, and all of my VME devices were listed under a Frame in MAX. I ran the VXI Resource Manager (Resman) and some or all of my VME devices are not listed under a Frame, but they are listed under Unassigned VME Devices. The configuration tree in MAX looks like the one in Unassigned VME.JPG attached below.

Solution: Because VME devices do not have configuration registers, they must be statically configured. This static configuration includes the Frame Number for the VME device. If a VME device was configured to be in a certain Frame Number, and no chassis was assigned to that Frame Number, then the VME device will be listed as an Unassigned VME device. This symptom could be caused by two possible problems. Either the frame number for the chassis has changed, or Resman can not communicate with the controller in that chassis.

The frame number of a chassis matches the Logical Address of the Slot 0 Controller. When using a VME-MXI-2 or VXI-MXI-2, the Logical Address of the VME-MXI-2 or VXI-MXI-2 board determines the Frame Number. If the Logical Address of the MXI-2 board has changed, then the Frame Number will change, and the statically configured VME devices will be listed as "Unassigned VME Devices." To fix this problem, change the Logical Address of the VME-MX-2 or VXI-MXI-2 back to the original Logical Address.

If Resman can not communicate with a controller, all of the statically configured VME devices will be listed as "Unassigned VME Devices." This problem could be a result of running Resman while your chassis is turned off. This problem could also be the result of a broken MXI-2 cable, a malfunctioning MXI-2 board, or a malfunctioning chassis.
