How can I query the Network License Server from an external application?

Primary Software: Electronics Workbench>>Multisim
Primary Software Version: 9.x
Primary Software Fixed Version: 9.x
Secondary Software: Electronics Workbench>>Ultiboard

Problem: I want to build an application that monitors the licenses that the Network License Server (NLS) is giving out to users so I can know which computers are running any of the available seats of Multisim or Ultiboard.

Solution: The recommended way to monitor computers that have check-out seats from the NLS is to manually launch the NLS and review the information provided. However, in some cases, institutions might want to have a higher level monitoring service for many purposes, including for example time spent with a license, logfile of which user was logged in and at which time, status of the service, and many others.

The NLS by itself will not respond to queries, however, every single event happening within itself is logged on the Windows Events Service. If your institution needs to build a monitoring application of the NLS, you can build an application that queries the Windows Events Service and parses the information provided. You will be able to see events such as 'service started', 'computer X check-out license at X time', 'computer X released its license at X time', and many others.

An example of how it looks is easy to preview. Go to Start >> Control Panel >> Administrative Tools >> Event Viewer and then on the left-hand side select Application, on the Event Viewer screen then filter the results for Source, and finally you are looking for source = EWBNLSS. Check each event so you can identify what is being written.

It is important to notice that the scope of this type of application is not supported by National Instruments or the Electronics Workbench Group and that this information is provided as a helpful reference for anyone interested in it.
