Can I Use the PXI-1000B DC Chassis with a PXI-818x Controller?

Hardware: PXI/CompactPCI>>Controllers>>PXI-8186, PXI/CompactPCI>>Chassis>>PXI-1000B, PXI/CompactPCI>>Controllers>>PXI-8187

I would like to use a PXI-818x series controller with my PXI-1000B chassis which has the DC power supply option. What limitations do I need to be aware of?

The PXI-1000B DC chassis and PXI-818x controller combination is valid, however, National Instruments does not recommend using these two devices together due to the power consumption compared to the available power.

The PXI-1000B DC is only capable of providing a combined 100W of power on the 3.3V and 5V power rails. At worst, the PXI-8186 controller needs 58.9W, leaving 41.1W available power for the PXI modules installed in the chassis. The combination is valid, but it is highly recommended to verify the power consumption of all the PXI modules to be installed in order to ensure that they can all be powered correctly.

The following table was used to calculate the maximum power consumption of the PXI-8186.  This table was found in Appendix A of the user manual linked below.

The following formula was used for the calculation:

MAX POWER = (5A * 3.3V) + (8A * 5V) + (0.2A * 12V) = 16.5 + 40 + 2.4 = 58.9W

Refer to the manuals linked below for more information on power specifications of the PXI-1000B and PXI-8186.
