Problem:
How do I configure a Serial ENET Device to plug directly into my PC?

Solution:
To configure a Serial ENET (ENET-232 or ENET-485) device to plug directly into a PC (not through a network hub) you will need a crossover Ethernet cable. You will also need to assign a static IP address to the PC and to the Serial ENET device.

Note:For Windows XP, set a static IP as follows:
  1. Select Start»Settings»Control Panel

  2. Open Network Connections

  3. Right Click on Local Area Network and Select Properties

  4. Under the General Tab choose Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and Select Properties

  5. Select Use Following IP Address

  6. Manually enter an IP address, such as 1.1.1.1. An IP address is the unique, computer-readable address of a device on your network.

  7. Enter a Subnet Mask, such as 255.0.0.0. The subnet mask is a code that helps the network device determine whether another device is on the same network or a different network.

Note: To install and set a corresponding address for the Serial ENET use the procedure below.
  1. Plug the Serial ENET device into the Ethernet port using a crossover Ethernet cable

  2. Open Measurement & Automation Explorer(MAX), right click on Devices and Interfaces and select Create New

  3. Navigate to and select Serial ENET Interface

  4. Turn Power on to the ENET device and waiting for the PWR/RDY light to transition to solid yellow

  5. After the PWR/RDY light goes solid yellow, select Next and select Search for Serial ENETs

  6. The Serial ENET device should be found but may not have an acceptable IP address and Subnet Mask. Select the ENET device found and select Properties

  7. Put the ENET device in configuration mode by pressing the round Cfg Reset button on the back of the device for 3 seconds. The configuration light should be blinking.

  8. Enter an IP address, such as 1.1.1.2, but make certain to use the same subnet mask as above (the subnet mask is the third of the three 1s in this case). You may set the Gateway IP and DNS server both to 0.0.0.0 Select Ok

  9. You should receive a message saying the ENET device has been configured and is in the process of rebooting. Select Ok again to close this dialogue box.

  10. Click Refresh on the NI ENET Device Configuration utility.

  11. The ENET device should now be present with the assigned IP and subnet mask.

  12. Highlight the device and choose Select

  13. A message stating the serial device has been added to your system should appear, and you will be prompted to reboot your computer.

  14. Verify after restart that the device is present in Measurement and Automation Explorer» Devices and Interfaces» ENET (your device). The ports should be present here and under Devices and Interfaces» Ports (Serial and Parallel)
