Manually Entering VISA Resource Name in LabVIEW

Primary Software: Driver Software>>NI-VISA
Primary Software Version: 3.0
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: Driver Software>>NI-VISA

Problem:
I created and tested a VISA Resource in Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX) that I would like to use in LabVIEW. However, when I use the VISA Resource Name Control, it doesn't appear in the list. I tried typing in the name, but this gave me an error. What can I do to work with this resource in LabVIEW?

Solution:

This error, while minor in nature, can occur for several different reasons, including amount of admin access on the PC, I/O Name Filtering, requiring a restart of LabVIEW/PC, and/or bad installation of the VISA driver.
Typing in the name of the resource into the controller may not resolve this issue as there are certain properties that are associated alias. Some steps to work around this is to:

  • Verify that I/O Name Filtering is not preventing you from viewing the resource (right-click on the resource control or constant and select I/O Name Filtering)
  • Drag and Drop the resource from MAX into LabVIEW, it will appear as a VISA Resource Name Control, already populated with your desired resource
  • Delete and recreate the resource
  • Restart MAX and LabVIEW
  • Restart the PC
  • Repair and/or Upgrade NI-VISA
