16-bit MS-DOS Subsystem Error After Installing NI-488.2 Driver

Primary Software: LabVIEW Development Systems>>Full Development System
Primary Software Version: 7.1
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: LabVIEW Development Systems>>Base Package, LabVIEW Development Systems>>Professional Development System
Hardware: GPIB

Problem:
After performing a complete install of LabVIEW 7.1, I inserted my PCI-GPIB board and booted up my computer. When Windows asked for the driver again, I installed the NI-488.2 CD that was included with my PCI-GPIB board. I do not see my board when I check for it in Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX). When I check the Device Manager, it shows up correctly as a National Instruments GPIB device. I tried to reinstall my software, but now I get this error when I reboot:

16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem

C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe
gpib-vdd.dll. An installable Virtual Device Driver failed Dll initialization. Chose 'Close' to terminate the application.

Solution:
The NI-488.2 driver CD is not necessary because a complete install of LabVIEW already contains NI-488.2 and MAX. When NI-488.2 was installed again, a different version of MAX and/or NI-488.2 was installed on top of the versions that were installed with LabVIEW 7.1. When trying to uninstall the software, only one version is uninstalled, so certain files may be left behind. This is why the error is seen. To solve this problem, try these steps:
  1. Uninstall the NI software as completely as possible. This may include uninstalling everything and cleaning the registry.
Note: You should always back up your Windows Registry before making changes to prevent user corruption.
  2. Uninstall the driver CD that was installed by accident and reboot.
  3. Perform a complete install of LabVIEW 7.1.
  4. Insert the PCI-GPIB card into the computer, and at boot-up, choose for a list of known drivers because the driver has been installed already.
