Error Installing PID Control or Automation Symbols Toolkit from Academic Site License or Developer Suite

Primary Software: NI Installers>>Installer Framework
Primary Software Version: 2.6
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: N/A

Problem:
I am trying to install the Measurement Studio PID Control Toolkit and the Measurement Studio Automation Symbols Toolkit from the Academic Site License (ASL) or Developer Suite distribution, but I get the following error:

Error: Windows SDK function returned an error. (Error code -12) The parameter is incorrect

How can I resolve this error and install my software?

Solution:
This error occurs when the path to the installer is too long for the older InstallShield installers.  This can happen when the installer is located on the network in a series of folders which makes the path too long for the InstallShield installer.  To resolve this issue on any supported Windows Operating System, you can move the installer folder to a different place on the network that has a shorter path, or copy the installer folder to your local machine and attempt the installation again.

If you are not using Windows 7, a another option to reduce the length of the installer path is to map a network drive to a drive letter on your local computer .  You can do this using the net use command.  For this example, the path will be: \\networkpath\folder1\folder2\setup.exe
  1. Open a command prompt by navigating to Start»Run and typing cmd
  2. Type net use X:\ "\\networkpath\folder1\folder2", where "X:" is the desired drive letter and the network path is in quotes.
  3. Open My Computer, navigate to the X:\ drive and run setup.exe.
