Data Acquisition Options for Macintosh OS 9 and OS X

Problem: What options are available for developing data acquisition applications for a Macintosh system with National Instruments products.

Solution: There are four options for doing data acquisition on a Macintosh system. The best option will depend on your application requirements.
  1. Use Mac OS X, LabVIEW 7 Express (or higher), and NI-DAQmx Base
    • Simpler data acquisition interface
    • Allows platform flexibility (not restricted to PXI)
    • Cheapest solution

  2. Use Mac OS X, LabVIEW 7 Express with the Real-Time Module, and PXI data acquisition hardware
    • Deterministic performance with LabVIEW Real-Time

  3. Use Mac OS 9.x, LabVIEW 7 Express (or earlier), and NI-DAQ 6.6.1.
    • Supports PCI based hardware or PXI based hardware through a MXI-3 link

  4. Develop your own driver for Mac OS X with the Measurement Hardware Driver Development Kit (DDK)
    • Solution for using PCI based data acquisition hardware on Mac OS X
    • Develop a driver in LabVIEW 7 Express or C++
    • Requires register level programming
