Maximum Number of GPIB-ENET and GPIB-ENET/100 Interfaces and Devices Supported by Operating System

Primary Software: Driver Software>>NI-488.2
Primary Software Version: 2.4
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: N/A

Problem:
How many GPIB-ENET and GPIB-ENET/100 boxes can I control from a single computer? How many instruments can I control with those boxes?

Solution:
The number of instruments that can be controlled is dependent on the operating system you are using. Here is a list of the maximum number of boxes and devices supported by operating system:

Windows 2000/XP/98/Me
With NI-488.2 version 2.x on Windows 2000/XP/98/Me and with NI-488.2 version 1.7 on Windows 9x/Me, you can configure the NI-488.2 software to communicate with up to 100 GPIB interfaces and 1024 logical devices, as long as the number of physical devices you connected to a single GPIB interface is 14, or fewer. (Note: This is also dependent on your system configuration (ex. Daisy Chain, Star Connection, etc.)) This information is also in the NI-488.2 User Manual.

MacOS X
The NI-488.2 driver version 2.x on MacOS X, you can configure the NI-488.2 software to communicate with up to 100 GPIB-ENET/100 interfaces and 1024 logical devices. The maximum number of physical devices you should connect to a single GPIB interface is 14, or fewer, depending on your system configuration. This information is also in the NI-488.2 User Manual.

Mac OS 8/9
The NI-488.2 driver for Mac OS 8/9 supports up to eight GPIB interfaces and up to 64 logical devices (total).

Windows 95
The NI-488.2 driver for Windows 98/95 (version 1.60 or 1.70) supports up to 100 GPIB-ENET or GPIB-ENET/100 boxes and up to 1024 devices (total).

Windows NT
The NI-488.2 driver for Windows NT/2000 (version 1.10 or 1.20) supports up to 32 GPIB-ENET or GPIB-ENET/100 boxes and up to 1024 logical devices, although the limit of 14 devices per controller makes 448 devices (total) a more realistic number.

Windows 3.x
The NI-488.2 driver for Windows 3.x (version 1.0) supports up to 24 GPIB-ENET boxes and up to 128 devices (total).

SunOS (Solaris 1.x and Solaris 2.x)
The NI-488.2 driver for Solaris 1.x (version 2.2) and the NI-488.2 driver for Solaris 2.x (version 1.3 or 1.4) support up to 128 GPIB-ENET or GPIB-ENET/100 interfaces and up to 128 devices (total), although the default values are 8 interfaces and 44 devices (total). See the respective manuals for these operating systems, for information on how to configure the software to reach the maximum number of interfaces and devices. Please note that devices 45 to 128 will have to be configured dynamically (i.e., you cannot use ibconf to configure these devices).

Other UNIX Operating Systems
The NI-488.2 driver for HP-UX (version 1.30 or 1.40) and the NI-488.2 driver for Digital UNIX (version 1.0 or 1.4) support up to 128 interfaces and up to 128 devices (total), with the same restrictions as the SunOS drivers. (Note that Digital UNIX is also known as OSF/1.)

CAUTION
Remember that the maximum number of GPIB devices allowed per controller is 14 devices, with at least 2/3 of the devices powered on. (Using GPIB expanders, even this number could be further increased.)

If your operating system is not listed here, then either the GPIB-ENET or GPIB-ENET/100 is not supported by a driver for that operating system, or that information was not available at the time this KnowledgeBase Entry was made. Refer to Product Reference: NI GPIB-ENET/100 for purchase information or Drivers and Updates: GPIB to see if there is a driver available for download for your operating system. Also, Support: GPIB Installation/Configuration Troubleshooter contains a comprehensive list of GPIB hardware and operating systems.
