What cables do I need with my NI-Motion Hardware?

Hardware: Motion Control

Problem:
I am trying to decide which cable to buy with my NI Motion Hardware.  There are multiple options available on the motion advisors website (http://sine.ni.com/nips/cds/view/p/lang/en/nid/3971).  What are the differences and which one do I need?

Solution:
There are three options available.  The part numbers are as follows:
  1. 186380-XX
  2. 186381-XX
  3. 189041-XX
The -XX denotes one of three cable lengths:
  • -0R5: 0.5 meters
  • -01: 1 meter
  • -02: 2 meters
The differences between the cables are described in the following three sections.

Cable 1:   SHC68-C68-S, 68 pin VHDCI to 68 pin VHDCI,
Part Numbers:
  • 186380-01
  • 186380-0R5
This cable has the same identical 68-pin VHDCI female connector on both ends.  This cable is used when connecting from NI-Motion Controller Card to NI Motor Drives (e.g. MID-7604/7602) and to the UMI-7772/4 connector blocks.

Note: This cable is not the same as the DAQ cable. The DAQ cable has wired common grounds and can create problems if used for Motion applications.

Cable 2:   SH68-C68-S, 68 Pin VHDCI to 68 Pin .05 Series D-Type,
Part Numbers:
  • 186381-01
  • 186381-02
  • 186381-0R5
One end of this cable has the standard VHDCI female connection seen above. The other is a 0.05 Series, D-Type SCSI, Female connector shown below. This is used with a UMI-7764 for connecting to 3rd party drives.

Cable 3:   SHC68-NT-S Shielded Cable Assembly (unterminated)
Part Number:
  • 189041-02
One end of this cable has the standard VHDCI female connection seen above. The other end terminates with pig-tail leads for custom cabling. This can be used to connect directly to third party drives without the use of a UMI, or for OLE applications.
